We love going to the Civil War Reenactment every year. North and South have set up camps, and they are open to wandering through and visiting with the folks who are in full dress using authentic tools and materials.
There are families that travel through and participate in the Reenactment on a regular basis. I think every year we get a bit starry-eyed and start plotting how to get ourselves onto their wagon. Someday…
The battle scenes are chilling. For one, the cannons are real and they are LOUD. For another, watching soldiers fall by the wayside is sobering; each one represents a brother, father, son. One of the shocking things I’ve learned is that people would take up picnics to watch these battles from a safe distance. I can’t imagine a more horrific way to spend a day!
I believe most of the men that fought were very young, teenagers even. It is hard to imagine when I drive past skateparks those very same young men donning weapons to fight for a cause bigger than themselves. I pray I never see that happen.
