I’m very pleased to bring you this podcast regarding the state of literacy in our nation today and what we, as mothers and fathers can do about changing that tide beginning with our very own families. This is not content just for homeschoolers! Sarah Gunning Moser is a wealth of information and insight; I’m sure you will gain much from her.
Besides writing, Sarah Gunning Moser has been married over twenty-five years. She is an Endorsed Spell to Write and Read Trainer and experienced classroom teacher, tutor, homeschooler, adult instructor, speaker, and business owner. Sarah moonlights in Seattle as a professional theatrical dresser and is a former manufacturing engineer in aircraft production.
Her passion and dream: to see America’s historical literacy restored and to introduce people to the richness of our language. Sarah dedicates her work to Jesus in this hurting world, and hopes by encouraging others she will improve their lives and knowledge of Christ through a deep love of reading.

I really enjoyed listening to this podcast. It was very interesting.
If anyone is looking for some free resources to begin to teach reading.
This site has phonogram flashcards free to download:
http://www.internationalparentingassociation.org/Materials/index.html
And http://www.archive.org (just search on the site) has the McGuffey Primer and all 6 readers in at least the revised version. Some of the readers have multiple versions available for free.
My four year old loves doing the McGuffery readers. 🙂

I have been looking for just the right phonics program for my homeschool. I have a great reader, an average reader, a struggling reader, a new reader and a prereader and I have never been totally pleased with any program we have used. I have been seeking something better for my kindergartener this year and something to help my struggling reader get on track. I purchased SWR last week and I look forward to using it. YouTube has some good SWR videos for teachers that I have been watching in order to prepare. This podcast was very informative and just what I needed as I planned my homeschool year. Thanks!

Hi. I just has a question. At some point (17:50 or so) you mention a book that changed your course. It sounds like you said: “Changing Reading at Home”, but despite rewinding I’m not sure what you said and I can’t seem to find it by googling. Would you mind telling me what that book was? Thank you! 😀

Hi Kayla
Here is the book, Teaching Reading at Home: http://www.amazon.com/Teaching-Reading-Home-Step-Step/dp/0923463682
It was a good book that got me into the practicality of how to apply Romalda Spalding’s research. Spell to Read and Write took all of that further and made it very, very easy to use in a home setting. It took me time (and training) to have the confidence and ease in using it. I’m using it for my 2nd-9th graders and it has been a real help and blessing; it’s been totally worth all the time I’ve put into it.
Thanks for taking the time to leave me a note 🙂
