Captivated: Finding Freedom in a Media Captive Culture

“What captures your attention controls your life”.  That quote still resonates with me along with my blog post, Narrowing.  How do I live a life, if not outside of, alongside of, a virtual world?  It’s ironic that we now can store our information, our documented lives and our work, in places called “clouds”.  To me, that is how it feels to work with the online world…like working within vapor-filled wisps of almost-nothing that will spread and change even without wind and in a moment’s notice can and sometimes does disappear.  The sad consequences I have seen with my own eyes are the ramifications within real life relationships.  An email is easily misread without the touches of body language and voice, and Facebook becomes a place to fan the fires of gossip and envy.  Despite being more “connected” it really is  a shallow tie.  And yet, media has been a great blessing as well, a place for the voiceless to have a say, entrepreneurs to try their wings, and news and information to be readily available outside of mainstream news sources that sometimes seem like indoctrination services.

The question to me is not IF we should use media, but HOW shall we use it?  It is an important question to haggle with and try to come to terms with, especially for Christians who are not to be of this world, but in it to primarily proclaim the gospel and make disciples.

Join me as I interview Phillip Telfer of Captivated, whose documentary raises these issues and highlights various people who have struggled with these issues.  It is an engaging documentary that seeks not to apply legalism but to ask the question of how to live wisely in a media saturated culture.
