As many of you know, we are downsizing our living space from 3800 square feet (not including the basement and attic) to under 1700 (no basement nor attic). We’ve been wanting to podcast some of the craziness going on, but honestly we are falling asleep practically at supper time. Today we spent the day at the new house working with an electrician to get things up to code, and while there I contemplated the kitchen.
This is my kitchen now. For a whole lot of other very pretty pictures, you can look here.
And this is where I’m going. And, yes, this is the whole kitchen. And, no, there are no cabinets. I think I counted nine drawers. And do you see those two little counters on each side of the sink? That’s my counter space.
I don’t know how it is all going to work, but I do have some ideas. I’ve decluttered and garage sale-ed and Goodwill-ed much out of my current kitchen. And I’m sure I’m still going to sit in the middle of this room with boxes everywhere wondering what I was thinking when I thought I could make those things fit. And there will be more decluttering and garage-saling and Goodwilling.
What’s been encouraging is hearing from people living in smaller spaces with even more people than us. One of my favorite encouragements was from a friend early on in the process; she said something like, “You could make a cardboard box look good.” ๐
Well, I’m thankful I’m not in a cardboard box (and, unfortunately, there are people who are…). I think that what you really see in that second picture and what you think about it is dependent upon your view of a whole lot of things.
What do I see, besides the nine drawers and small counter space?
I see walls and a ceiling and a hardwood floor. I see a well-built home made out of lumber milled by the original builder. I see running water, electric power, appliances, and a window above the sink so I can watch the frogs at the pond while I wash dishes.
In downsizing, I see an opportunity to live mortgage-free. I see challenges to rise up to and problems that will need creative solutions. And I see potential in this little house and what it could do for us.
Have you ever thought about downsizing? I’ll share more soon!

Not that either if these ideas. Will actually make your kitchen bigger, but painting the wood white (think cottage by the seaside), and changing the light future to something that illuminates the whole space would help.
You could attach magnetic rods to the fridge for tea towels, and some people will open a drawer and place a cutting board on top when they’re out of space.
You can do it!

I like your new kitchen best! Reminds me of a little house on the prairie. Home is where your heart is and where that is so will be your treasure. We camp in a small camper. Love the closeness! When we get home, we spread out. Closeness over. ๐
I miss the camper and our togetherness. I am envious and so very excited for you!

I’m happy too but it’s mingled with doubt. It’s true about the spreading out, though; we have that in our current house. It makes for more of a mess around here as well. I’m hopeful!

I have an off the topic question. First, congratulations on that sweet one growing inside. Can I ask you for any tips at all for getting and staying pregnant in your 40’s? (Diet, natural progesterone cream, etc…) I just turned 42. I have 4 children ages 9-20 months. We so want another but medicine WARNS against. My trust, however, is in The One True and Living God and I am hoping He says yes!
Thank you Keri Mae!

I think diet is a huge factor and I blame my poor eating habits for the problems I had in my early baby-bearing years. Also, getting hormones checked is very important before starting any replacement therapy. Currently I am enjoying this book and wish I had read it 20 years ago. I’m not through it yet so can’t give a wholehearted endorsement but you could look into it: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BWYOUKY/ref=pe_385040_118058080_TE_M1T1DP
BTW, I’m currently 44 years old ๐

Thank you Keri Mae! I will see about the kindle version. I know there are things I can be doing to better my odds. Going to see doc tomorrow to get blood drawn and find out about levels. Nutrition is so powerful! I know you know that. I am re-listening to your preventing and healing dental cavities podcast. Packed with good info. I look forward to when you podcast about your transition. Praying that it all goes smoothly for you and your family. Thank you again! You are such a blessing! P.S. 44 never looked so youthful and vibrant – still a beautiful, young mother you are! You are such a good example of trusting in God. Thank you for truly living out your faith.

Where are you going to put the Dandelion Mural?????

*sniff* That’s hard to leave. But my artist friend offered to do another painting at the new house when I’m ready. Thinking the risers on the stairs; maybe scripture?

Living mortgage-free is wonderful. The wood in your new kitchen looks in great shape. I’m looking forward to seeing more as you creatively decorate!
