We have a new puppy and he is keeping me very busy! He was 8 1/2 weeks old when we picked him up, and he is settling in nicely. We never even had one night of whining from him, amazingly. I love the feel of his fur; it is so wooly! And dirt just dries up and falls off! His ears look a little green because of the tattoos in his ears.
He is a Maremma Sheepdog, and is considered a livestock guardian dog. Naturally, he will be living outside, just like our other dog. I don’t understand why that bugs some people, but I’m ok with that.
This is the first puppy I’ve ever had. Well, I guess I had one when I was 6 years old or so, but the story is that the pup ran away. I hardly remember it at all. I am extremely grateful for the folks at Leerburg for their website and goods. I’ve watched three of their videos and other than very annoying spelling errors that kept coming up, the information given was very positive and helpful. I brought home my puppy with complete confidence that I could train and raise him up well, and I knew what sorts of behavior to expect.
So far, he’s learned to sit, come, and “down”. This dog is incredibly smart and independently minded, which means I really have to work to maintain his respect. He will be moving into the goat pen/barn this weekend, where he will hopefully have a long and wonderful life protecting his new and growing family. Given the option between playing with the humans or hanging out with the goats, I can honestly say he’d rather be in with the goats. That’s just what their breed is like.
I’m inclined to think at this point that everyone should have a puppy at least once in their lives. His name is Shepherd, and he is a goooooood boy.
