It was difficult not to blog for a year. I realize that this is because I am game to just spread my opinion everywhere. Sometimes before thinking.
Often.
I curiously read the introduction to the book of Habakkuk, wondering how he moved and interacted with the sleepiness, the idolatry of God’s children about him. Instead my eyes fell upon words that explained, “of the prophet himself nothing is known…”
Nothing?
I know he was perplexed by the silence of God in light of the blatant sins of Israel. I know he gave great praise to the character and holiness of God. I know he spent his years watching for the Lord, waiting for Him to respond. I know, too, that Habakkuk heard from God.
I thought of all the faithful and faceless women, quietly going about their work in their homes whilst the culture battles about them. While babies are dying in mother’s wombs, marriages are flippantly undone, and militant feminism continues its heavy march, stripping manhood from our boys and sissifying our men. Our nation has become a stench to not only our good God, but to our natural sensibilities.
Yet these godly women, much like the prophet, are silent. I know, because they have been reading my blog and writing to me, but they do not jump into the public fray. They have opinions, yet they quietly do the wash. They have their own wills, yet they bend to their husband’s. They have no outlet, no blog, no place to grumble nor give high praise, in fact, they have nothing but the Lord’s ears.
Nothing? In truth, they have it all. And in this sense, silence is akin to faithfulness, to trust. I am coming to see that silence is strength.
But the Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him. (Hab 2:20)
